Forgiveness is one of the heaviest words in the language, because it points in two directions at once. There is the forgiveness we long to receive<\/em> – the relief of being clean again after we have failed, of putting down the weight of guilt and shame we have been carrying. And there is the forgiveness we are asked to give<\/em> – the far harder work of releasing someone who has wounded us, when every instinct says to hold on to the offence. Most of us are stuck on one side or the other, and sometimes both at the same time.<\/p>\n

Whichever weight you are carrying today, there is a place to bring it. Forgiveness, in both directions, is at the very heart of the faith – and it begins not with our effort but with what God has already done.<\/p>\n\n

Forgiven, and Learning to Forgive<\/h2>\n

The promise is astonishingly complete: if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us.<\/em> The psalmist says that God removes our wrongs as far as the east is from the west – a distance with no end, a separation that cannot be reversed. If you have been carrying shame over something you have already brought to God, hear this gently: He has already let it go. You are allowed to stop punishing yourself for what He has chosen not to hold against you.<\/p>\n

And it is out of that forgiveness that we find the strength to forgive others. Paul puts the two side by side – be kind to one another, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ forgave you.<\/em> Forgiving someone who hurt you is not pretending it did not happen, and it is rarely a single, tidy moment. More often it is a process you return to again and again, each time the memory rises. But it is possible, because the One who asks it of you also supplies what it takes.<\/p>\n

A Prayer for Forgiveness<\/h2>\n
\n

Father, I come to You needing forgiveness and needing help to forgive. First, for myself: I have fallen short, and I have carried the weight of it long after I confessed it to You. Thank You that You have already forgiven me, fully and finally. Help me to believe it, and to put down the shame I was never meant to keep.<\/p>\n

And then the harder part. You know the hurt I am still holding, and the person I have not been able to release. I cannot do this on my own strength. Soften my heart where it has grown hard. Free me from the bitterness that is doing me more harm than it will ever do them. I choose, with Your help, to begin letting it go – even if I must choose it again tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Make me kind the way You have been kind to me. Forgiving, because I have been so freely forgiven. In Jesus’ name, amen.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

As Many Times as It Takes<\/h2>\n

When Peter asked how many times he should forgive someone, he thought seven was generous. Jesus answered with a number meant to sound endless – because forgiveness is less a one-time transaction than a posture of the heart we keep returning to. If you forgave someone yesterday and woke today to find the resentment back again, you have not failed. You simply pray it through once more.<\/p>\n

That is no burden, but a freedom. Every time you release an offence, you are the first one set loose from it. And every time you receive God’s mercy afresh, you are reminded that you stand only by grace – the same grace you are now learning to extend. Come back to this prayer as often as you need. There is no limit on how much forgiveness God is willing to pour out, in either direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
