The Story Behind the Picture
Zacchaeus was a tax collector in the town of Jericho — and not a popular one. He had grown rich by taking more money than he should, and many people did not like him at all. He was also a very short man.
One day Jesus came to town, and the streets were so crowded that Zacchaeus could not see over the heads of the people. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree just to catch a glimpse. To his great surprise, Jesus stopped right beneath the branches, looked up, and called him by name: “Zacchaeus, come down — today I am coming to your house.”
Jesus chose to be the friend of the very person everyone else had given up on. That kindness changed Zacchaeus’s heart completely: he promised to give to the poor and to pay back anyone he had cheated, many times over. It is a beautiful reminder that no one is ever too small, too lost, or too far away for Jesus to love.
